Cysticercosis — caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium — is a significant risk in areas with poor sanitation and free-ranging pigs. Tropical South America

The Amazon basin and surrounding regions present exposure risks for cutaneous larva migrans (hookworm larvae penetrating skin), intestinal helminths, and in specific areas, less common parasites such as gnathostomiasis.
