For millions of Americans, the kitchen garden is a source of pride. Homegrown tomatoes, leafy greens, and root vegetables represent a commitment to healthier eating and a more sustainable lifestyle. What most gardeners do not consider, however, is that the very soil they cultivate can serve as a reservoir for parasitic organisms—some of which are capable of causing serious illness in adults and children alike.

This is not a reason to abandon your garden beds. It is, however, a reason to understand what may be living in them.

What Lives in Garden Soil?

Soil is a complex biological ecosystem, and not everything in it is benign. Several parasites are known to persist in garden environments, often introduced through animal feces, contaminated water sources, or improperly composted organic material.

Toxocara species are among the most commonly encountered soil-borne parasites in residential settings across the United States. The eggs of Toxocara canis (from dogs) and Toxocara cati (from cats) are shed in animal feces and can remain viable in soil for years. Children who play in garden areas and adults who work with bare hands are at particular risk of accidental ingestion.

Ascaris lumbricoides, the large intestinal roundworm, is transmitted through soil contaminated with human or animal feces. While it is more prevalent in regions with inadequate sanitation infrastructure, it remains a documented concern in rural and semi-rural American communities where composting practices are inconsistent.

Ancylostoma species—hookworms—can penetrate skin directly, meaning that gardening barefoot or kneeling on contaminated soil without protective gear creates a genuine pathway for infection. Hookworm larvae thrive in warm, moist soil and are particularly common in the southeastern United States.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia, while technically protozoan parasites rather than helminths, are also found in garden soil contaminated by runoff or animal activity and can be transmitted through unwashed produce.

How Common Gardening Habits Create Risk

Many of the practices that make home gardening feel natural and intuitive are, from a parasitology standpoint, high-risk behaviors.

Working with bare hands is perhaps the most significant exposure point. Touching your face, rubbing your eyes, or eating a snack without thoroughly washing your hands after handling soil can transfer parasite eggs or larvae directly to your gastrointestinal tract. This is especially true when working near areas where pets defecate or where compost has been applied.

Using raw or insufficiently composted manure as fertilizer is another common risk factor. Animal manure—particularly from cattle, pigs, or poultry—may contain helminth eggs that survive if the composting process does not reach sufficient temperatures. The United States Department of Agriculture recommends that compost reach an internal temperature of at least 131°F for several consecutive days to reliably inactivate pathogens, yet many home composters do not monitor or achieve these conditions.

Harvesting and eating produce without adequate washing is the final link in the transmission chain. Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach are particularly susceptible to surface contamination because of their structure, which can trap soil particles in folds and crevices.

Sanitation Protocols Every Gardener Should Follow

The good news is that practical, low-cost interventions can dramatically reduce the risk of parasite transmission in the home garden.

Wear gloves consistently. Nitrile or rubber gardening gloves create a physical barrier between your skin and contaminated soil. Change gloves before touching your face or handling food, and wash them regularly.

Establish a handwashing routine. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after any soil contact, before eating, and before food preparation. Hand sanitizer alone is not effective against helminth eggs.

Manage pet access. If cats or dogs have access to your garden, their feces can introduce Toxocara eggs into your growing areas. Consider fencing off vegetable beds, promptly removing pet waste, and ensuring your animals are on a regular veterinary deworming schedule.

Compost properly. Use a thermometer to verify that your compost reaches recommended temperatures throughout the pile. Alternatively, purchase commercially processed compost, which is subject to standardized pathogen reduction requirements.

Wash produce thoroughly. Rinse all homegrown vegetables under running water, scrubbing firm-skinned produce with a clean brush. For leafy greens, consider a soak in a produce wash solution followed by multiple rinses. Cooking vegetables eliminates virtually all parasitic risk.

Rotate bare-soil areas. Avoid repeatedly working in the same patch of soil without allowing it to dry out periodically. Many parasite eggs and larvae are sensitive to desiccation and UV exposure.

Recognizing Symptoms of Soil-Transmitted Parasitic Infections

Many helminth infections are asymptomatic in their early stages, which is part of what makes them easy to overlook. When symptoms do appear, they may include abdominal discomfort, bloating, intermittent nausea, unexplained fatigue, or skin irritation at the site of larval penetration (in the case of hookworm). Children infected with Toxocara may develop a condition called visceral larva migrans, which can cause fever, coughing, and in rare cases, ocular involvement.

If you or a family member experience persistent gastrointestinal symptoms following significant soil exposure, it is worth consulting a healthcare provider. Stool testing can identify many helminth infections, and diagnosis guides appropriate treatment.

The Role of OTC Anthelmintics for Gardeners

For individuals who spend substantial time in soil—market gardeners, hobby farmers, and those who work with animal manure regularly—awareness of over-the-counter anthelmintic options is a practical component of health management.

Medications such as albendazole and mebendazole are broad-spectrum anthelmintics that act against a range of intestinal worm species, including roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Albendazole, in particular, is frequently used in global deworming programs precisely because of its efficacy across multiple helminth species.

It is important to note that OTC anthelmintics are appropriate for confirmed or strongly suspected intestinal helminth infections. They are not a substitute for sanitation practices, and they are not indicated for all soil-transmitted organisms (protozoan infections like Giardia, for instance, require different treatment). Anyone considering anthelmintic treatment should review current dosing guidelines and, where uncertainty exists, consult a physician or pharmacist.

That said, for individuals with documented or high-probability exposure—particularly those caring for children who play in soil regularly—understanding the treatment landscape is a meaningful form of preparedness.

A Garden That Nourishes Safely

Homegrown produce remains one of the most nutritious and satisfying food sources available to American families. The parasite risks associated with gardening are real but manageable. With consistent hygiene practices, thoughtful composting, and an informed approach to produce preparation, the kitchen garden can deliver all of its benefits without becoming a source of household illness.
